1 - Follow the mysterious girl.
As soon as you exit your room, you'll see the strange ethereal figure from your dreams materialize nearby the stairs leading to the second floor of the academy dormitories. Follow her and she'll lead you outside and towards the Goddess Statue. Just before you reach the statue's vicinity, she cuts to the right and heads along a precarious roundabout route.
After a bit of chasing, you'll run into a Remlit. These cat-like creatures were docile during the day but have become rabid now that the moon is out. You can't "kill" them, but you can stun them with a few strokes from your sword. Keese and Chu Chus also plague this road. Keep your eyes peeled for a treasure chest containing 20 Rupees along one of the lower paths.
Remlit
Remlits are normally quite docile, but at night they become feral thanks to a demonic power. If you transform Batreaux into a human, they'll no longer change when the moon comes out, making it safe to traverse the town at night. Zelda owns one of these as a pet. You can't kill them, but you can make them retreat with a few sword strokes.

Keep following the strange figure up the hill and grab onto the ledge. Slide your way across - be mindful of your Stamina and let it recover if necessary before attempting - and sprint up the incline ahead to keep up. At the top of the hill, hop across the gap, then across another gap and up some conveniently-placed vines, and keep climbing until she brings you to the front of the Goddess Statue. She'll approach the bird-shaped crest and pass through it, revealing a hidden passage leading inside the statue's base.
2 - Claim the Goddess Sword from the chamber inside the Goddess Statue.
Approach the sword resting in the pedestal before you and the mysterious girl will identify herself. Her name is Fi and she's a spirit that resides in the sword, meant to guide the Goddess's chosen hero. After she's done speaking, press the A button to interact with the sword. Then hold the A button and move the Wii Remote in a vertical "lifting" motion to withdraw the sword from the stone.
Goddess Sword
This is the sword left in Skyloft by Her Grace, the goddess. It has sacred powers the hero can use against evil. Its guardian spirit, Fi, is the hero's servant and guide. Once you wake up after Zelda gets sucked down to the surface, follow Fi past a series of obstacles and into the Goddess Statue to access the Skyloft Shrine. At the heart of the shrine, withdraw the sword from its pedestal and it's all yours.

Once you've obtained the Goddess Sword, Gaepora will appear and explain the situation concerning the Goddess Sword, then together with Fi you're told to pursue Zelda on the surface world below the clouds. Fi gives you an Emerald Tablet, which when placed in the statue nearby will open a portal to the surface.
Emerald Tablet
The Emerald Tablet is one of a set of three ancient stone slabs that corresponds to a region of the surface world. Place the tablets into the slots inside the Goddess Statue to activate portals to the surface that you can use to reach these regions.

Before you can get there, you'll need to charge power in your sword to fire a Skyward Strike at the Goddess Crest nearby. Point the Wii Remote straight up to build up energy, then swing to release. Targeting the crest ensures that your strike will hit its mark. Then place the tablet into the slot in the wall to activate it.
3 - Travel to the Faron region on the surface.
A large column of green light will appear, marking the entrance to the forest region. To get there, you'll need to hop onto your Loftwing and fly. When you wake up the next morning, you'll don your green clothes and be given clearance to head to the world below. Leave your room and Fledge will give you a gift - the Adventure Pouch!
Adventure Pouch
The Adventure Pouch holds all kinds of backup supplies for ambitious adventurers. For you, this means shields, bottles, and occasionally some other stuff as well... You'll receive it as a gift before you take your first trip down to the surface world. It can only hold a certain number of items at a time, so be sure to make good use of the Item Check in the Skyloft Bazaar to swap out items as you need them.

Before you go, you have a few options - you can explore Skyloft as well as obtain a shield and change the user interface to suit your needs on the Gear Screen (press 1 to open the Gear Menu). You can talk to Owlan to receive a free Wooden Shield to start you off. Equip it by holding the - button (this opens the Adventure Pouch) and manipulating the pointer to select the Wooden Shield. Release the - button to equip the shield. You can also pick up an Empty Bottle from Luv, the woman who runs the Potion Shop at the Bazaar in the center of town. You'll whip it out for use in the very same way and then actually use it with the A button.
Wooden Shield
This is a basic Skyloft knight's shield. It's made of wood, so it burns and breaks easily. Upgrade it at the Scrap Shop to improve its durability. Owlan will give you one to start off your quest, but should it ever break you can purchase a new one at the Skyloft Bazaar for 50 Rupees.

When you're ready, approach any of the diving points and take a dashing leap off the edge. Press Down of the D-pad to call your Loftwing, then fly as fast as you can towards the column of light. If you dive close enough to it, you will dismount and skydive down automatically, but otherwise you can tap Down on the D-Pad to do so manually. Make sure you don't slam into the sheet of clouds - aim for the opening!
Feel free to explore the other sky islands as you please before you head for the surface.
4 - Reinforce the seal at the base of the Sealed Grounds.
You'll arrive in the Sealed Grounds, an ancient shrine to the Goddess that's older than Skyloft. It's a spiral-shaped area with a large seal at the very bottom, hence the name. Make your way to the right, engaging the Deku Babas as you go, until you reach the sealed door. It's barred by a mysterious force, but if you reinforce the seal at the bottom of the pit, it'll open to admit you.
Deku Baba
Deku Babas don't have any eyes, but that doesn't mean they can't track you with... wait, they don't have any sense of smell or sound, either. Be careful not to let them bite you. Their buds are covered in a hard carapace, so if you want to cut them you'll have to slice them across their open mouths. Gold-colored ones are tougher and can open their mouths in multiple directions, so watch them carefully. The Beetle can also slice right through their stems, and they'll gobble down any Bomb Flowers you toss their way...

Head down to the very bottom of the Sealed Grounds - you can simply hop off the cliffs and use the Sailcloth to slow your fall if you wish - and approach the sealing spike in the center of the spell-circle. You'll be prompted to blast it with a Skyward Strike to reinforce the seal, so do so just as you did with the Goddess Crest in Skyloft.
5 - Speak with the old woman at the Sealed Temple.
Activating the seal will cause the many holes in the ground to shoot up air, which you can use to ascend faster. Simply approach them and step into the blowing air and you'll deploy your Sailcloth automatically. Head towards the temple doors and the spell binding them will dissipate, allowing you to go inside. This is the Sealed Temple, ancient shrine of the Goddess. An old woman awaits you at the far end of the room. She'll give you the power to place a beacon to use as a waypoint, tell you about where Zelda has gone, and open the door leading out of the temple and towards Faron Woods.
Grab the Bottle of Revitalizing Potion in the treasure chest on your right and then exit through the newly-unlocked door.
Revitalizing Potion
The Revitalizing Potion serves a dual-purpose. Not only does it replenish four units of your life meter, it also fully repairs your equipped shield's Shield Gauge! You can upgrade it at the Infusion Shop in the Skyloft Bazaar, as well as buy refills should you run out. It was kind of the old woman to leave this potion for you!

A few steps away you'll run into a Goron surrounded by Bokoblins. These are the toughest enemies you've faced yet. They'll block your attacks with their own swords, and they appear in a fairly large group.
Bokoblin
Bokoblins are more intelligent than your average monsters. They'll use their weapons to block your attacks, sometimes parrying your incoming blows. To defeat them, you'll have to strike from a direction they're not defending against. They are known to wield a variety of weapons, from rusty cleavers to clubs and hammers. Boss Bokoblins carry horns that they use to summon reinforcements. You'll have to take them out by detonating their watchtowers with Bombs to prevent them from calling in backup. They seem to appear in multiple color varieties as well.

Defeat them and the Goron will introduce himself as Gorko and explain some of the things he knows (or thinks he knows) about the sky world. He'll also help you activate the save statues here on the surface so you can use them at anytime to record your progress. Save statues out in the open overworld on the surface can also be used as launch points to return to the sky, so make sure you examine each one you meet during your travels.
Keep moving towards the forest and you'll run into a large log, which you can roll forward to create a stepping stone to help you scale the cliff ahead. From there, it's just a short walk to reach the forest proper...
