There has been big talk around here, and elsewhere, that Nintendo should let someone outside of EAD make a Zelda game for the Wii U (probably not the first game though). We’ve also discussed Retro Studios as a possible new developer of the game. What do we see in Retro Studios that makes us think that they can do the franchise justice?
I have been playing through Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for the first time as my first introduction to the Metroid franchise. To be honest, the game was not what I was expecting; I was expecting some sort of space aliens version of Call of Duty. Instead, I got much, much better.
But, whilst playing, I keep getting the same nagging thought over and over again: I feel like I’m playing a Zelda game. I know that Metroid and Zelda are not similar at all in story or concept, but hear me out on this.
What is so similar about the two series is the gameplay. In both series (at least, in Zelda and the Metroid Prime series), the silent protagonist traverses through unknown dungeon-like locations in search of power-ups, weapon upgrades, etc. in an effort to save the world. Along the way, you solve various puzzles (often requiring the power-ups and weapon upgrades you found earlier) and lead you to the lair of the boss. Whilst fighting the boss, you need to determine where his weak point is and what weapon it is susceptible to.
That, on top of the graphic capabilities that we know Retro is capable of (MP 3 looks superb; I’ve yet to judge the other games), makes me even more hopeful of a Zelda game coming from Nintendo’s premier Western studio. We probably won’t see one until a few years after Nintendo puts out a Zelda Wii U game, but it is something to hope for.
In the meantime, I hope that Retro Studios is working on a Metroid game in the same vein as the Prime series.
What do you think about the prospect of Retro Studios developing a Zelda game?
