With E3 just a few weeks away, everyone is in a frenzy with rumors and speculations about the Wii U. While Zelda U, color schemes, launch titles, etc. are hot topics of discussion and debate, people often leave out discussions on the Wii U menu, and it’s really a shame.
If you think about it, the menu is one of the most important aspects of a gaming console. It will be the first thing you see when you boot the console, and many will likely make their first impressions of the system based on the menu. If the menu is too complicated and difficult to use, the system will be a turn off and could end up at a Gamestop near you.
That begs the question now: what kind of menu best suits the needs of gamers? What menu should be seen in the Wii U?
The first question to address is where to put the menu. Should it be on the TV, on the controller, or both? Personally, I would like to see the menu implemented on the controller or on both the controller and TV. This allows easier navigation through the touch screen. Nintendo should also include an option to change the menu placement to meet the player’s preference.

Once you know where you’re going to put it, you need to decide upon a design. I don’t see any reason to deviate from the menu system used by the Wii and 3DS; it’s simple, elegant, and functional. Why change what still works? In my opinion, other ideas like the one above are too cluttered for me; they look pretty good at first, but it seems it would be way too difficult to navigate.
So, what would you like to see out of the Wii U’s menu? What other unsung aspects of the Wii U would you like to have discussed?
