• Well, this is certainly an odd story. Supposedly, both a Banjo-Kazooie title and Donkey Kong Country 4 were thrown around as ideas for DS titles by Rare at some point in the early-mid 2000’s. As you may now, while Rare is a Microsoft company, they still retain the rights to make games for Nintendo handhelds (to this day) - and they did develop Diddy Kong Racing for the DS - instead of one of these two titles, if this rumor is to be believed,

According to a YouTube commenter who claimed to be a worker at Rare, both of these titles were thrown around as ideas before being thrown aside in favor of Diddy Kong Racing DS. Now, YouTube comments rank in credibility somewhere between a message from an elementary school game of telephone and the official platform of your local politician seeking reelection.

That is - until a former Rare staff member comes out and tells you not to investigate said YouTube comment any further because Rare is “vindictive” of leaked content. Of course, you could argue that this very act gives the comment the credibility it completely lacked before…and you’d be right!

Here’s a link to the original story on DK Vine. It’s quite an epic tale, and the…interesting (yet somewhat endearing) writing style of the author only adds to the surreal sense of the facts. This actually happened, and yet it feels so unreal.

For a summary of events (in case you don’t wish to visit the link): A comment was made on a YouTube video depicting beta footage of an old Banjo-Kazooie game by a man claiming Rare threw around the idea of either a DS iteration of Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong Country 4. The author of the story (who goes by the name of “Matt”) used whatever his inside sources are to confirm that the leaker was indeed a Rare employee.

Another Rare staffer then “reminded” their staff that Rare is “vindictive” of employees and ex-employees who leak information about games - even when said games were ideas tossed around for a bit.

So apparently, these two titles were possibilities for DS games, but they never materialized. Would you like to see a Banjo-Kazooie come to the 3DS at some point? Comment away!
