• If there is one thing that cannot be denied in relation to the Metroid series, it’s that Samus Aran has had some breath-taking adventures. She has fought some incredible adversaries, traversed a variety of different locations, visited an array of dangerous planets, and acquired several of the greatest arsenals ever seen in video games.

The question is where, or even what, next for Nintendo’s favourite armoured heroine?

I can’t remember how long ago it was now, but the good people at Nintendo issued their official timeline for the chronological order of events for the Metroid saga. Their placement of some of the titles surprised me at first but, after thinking about it further, the sequence made perfect sense and maintained a very solid continuity.

By the way, before I continue, for those who do not know the timeline it is as follows: Metroid/Zero Mission (NES/GBA) comes first, followed by the entire Prime series (Metroid Prime (GC), Metroid Prime: Hunters (DS), Metroid Prime: Echoes (GC), Metroid Prime: Corruption (Wii) in that order), then Metroid 2: Return of Samus (GB) and Super Metroid (SNES). The timeline is ended with Metroid: Other M, and finally Metroid Fusion (GBA) to finish what we currently know of Samus’ story so far.

I won’t go into the storylines of these titles in depth, just in case people have missed any, but Metroid Fusion, based on it’s events HAS to be the final instalment of the current timeline. To put it bluntly but without ruining anything, Samus gets irrevocably altered during the events that occur creating a Fusion suit. Seeing as these changes do not appear in any other title, this places it quite cleanly as the most up-to-date title. It did surprise me that the Prime series was between Metroid and Metroid 2, but, after further thought, I was quite stupid to think those two could directly follow each other anyway.

Personally, as Samus’ next mission, I would like to see her next assignment after the events of Fusion whether that be classic 2D or Prime’s incredible 3D. There was so much unexplored potential from the Fusion suit that I am dying to see. Even more so, I would like the series to be handed back to Retro Studios as well. As much as I personally enjoyed Other M, many people were not happy with Team Ninja’s attempt at continuing the Metroid story, and I do acknowledge that Other M is the weakest in the franchise.

This leads on to the big question, where do you want it to go from here? Do you want Samus’ next adventure fit into the timeline around the middle, like the last instalment Other M? Or maybe it to be the start of a new series of adventures entirely like the Prime series?
