We haven’t had the chance yet to talk about the sales of THQ’s assets and franchises that occurred yesterday, but one of the sadder stories to come out of the whole mess is not a single studio made a bid for Vigil games. Vigil is a newer studio for THQ, but they are also the ones responsible for the fantastic Darksiders series. It was rather surprising not a single bid was made, since even a really tiny bid could have taken the whole studio. Of course, Darksiders itself probably isn’t bound by the studio, so theoretically you could just purchase the franchise itself.
Platinum Games, which includes the team that’s bringing the Wii U The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 are pretty interested in adding Darksiders to their roster if they can get it cheap (Platinum doesn’t necessarily have a lot of money. They can’t even publish their own games financially). It’s understandable why they might not have been involved in the bidding with the big boys yesterday consider this fact, but in the aftermath Platinum may be sending or communicating with the lawyers involved in all of this suggesting a small bid price for Vigil or simply just Darksiders itself if no one else is laying claim.
The best news in this is that it could prevent the death of a new, more mature, Zelda esque series. It also means that Nintendo and Platinum could potentially work out even more contracts and such to get Darksiders to be Wii U exclusive, which would certainly help bolster reasons for folks to get the console. Still, everything right now is just public talk, and we don’t know if Platinum has made any serious efforts to get their relatively tiny offer in to nab a series that will die out entirely otherwise
“In THQ’s studio and IP selling off auction, Darksiders is unsold? [We] wanna buy it…on the cheap…”
Well as the world goes, we hope it happens. The series is too new with too much potential to vanish due to THQ’s misgivings. Also with a trusted studio like Platinum Games we can be sure that bare minimum, future installments would likely appear on the Wii U.
