• “Since I’m allowed to drop it on you all now, I’ll just go ahead and say it. The ‘Mother re-release’ I’d mentioned a bit before, we’re making progress on that.” —Shigesato Itoi, creator of Mother

That’s right—MOTHER. The elusive Mother is headed to… something. Series creator Shegesato Itoi has recently announced that something is in the works for the series, but he wants to stress that it isn’t Mother 4.

“It’s not 4! We’re trying to get Mother working again right now. I still can’t mention any details, but I have to make clear that this isn’t ‘4’!”

So this raises more questions than answers. Really, we know nothing about it beyond “something is happening, and it isn’t Mother 4.” There’s been speculation for years as to what Mother‘s next step was—A compilation game? EarthBound coming to the Virtual Console? A whole new entry in the series?  While the latter may be discounted, every rerelease is still up in the air. The only clue we have is that he calls it, “The Mother re-release,” and this could mean anything.

The most logical thought would immediately be a digital re-release of the original Mother, but because translation errors are easy to make, it’s entirely possible he could be referring to the series as a whole: any one entry, or even a compilation of all three. The other question that comes about is whether it’s simply a Virtual Console release or a full-scale remake. Still, the fact that Mother is getting any attention after so many localization and re-release issues is incredible progress.

A few months ago, Satoru Iwata hinted that something might be in planning, and it looks as if his comment wasn’t just another “get hopes up and crush them” moment. Clearly there has been serious progress on this release, or Itoi would not have made this announcement today.

The one thing, however, that’s most important about this news is that it shows Nintendo is trying to revive the franchise, and there’s sure to be more following whatever project is currently in development. With imminent representation in Super Smash Bros. and this introduction of the franchise to today’s younger audiences, there’s no way Nintendo won’t capitalize on this opportunity to bring the franchise back to its full glory.

So get excited. Even if we don’t know what it is, we know some sort of revival is coming for the Mother series. What do you think it is? A remake, or a Virtual Console re-release? Which of the three titles do you think is getting the special treatment, or do you think it’s all three? This is a perfect time to show off your Motherly love, so get talking in the comments about your favorite moments, characters, and memories.
