One exciting fact about New Super Mario Bros. 2 is that it is the first handheld, main series Mario game to truly feature cooperative play. The entire single player game is playable with a friend, just like New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
Something that I was very curious about was how the camera would work. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the camera would scroll out when players moved farther away from each other. This worked very well, in my opinion, and it never really seemed to disrupt the gameplay for me.
The camera movement for New Super Mario Bros. 2 works in quite a different way from its Wii counterpart. In the game, an arrow is placed above either Mario or Luigi’s head, and that player is the one that the camera is focused on. The player without the arrow has to follow the other player. However, there is an interesting twist. If the player without the arrow performs a power drop on the player with the camera, that player will steal control of the camera from them. I think this is kind of an interesting idea, as it adds an element of competition between the players. Hopefully it works out well and doesn’t leave the other player constantly lagging behind.
