In addition to the Wii U patent documents we discussed earlier, there were a few papers that deserve reviewing.
Included in the documents were blueprints for a redesign of the Zapper for the Wii U. Now, like all patent releases, these were actually filed months ago, and this design has most likely changed since then, but it is still very notably different.
As you can see in the image below, the design appears truncated and structured so that the Wii U controller is better balanced than it would have been on the Zapper design that exists for the Wii.
Now one of the things I’m most excited about concerning the Wii U is the combined use of the controller and Zapper for First Person Shooter titles. The level of immersion that comes from having the screen mounted at the end of your ‘gun’ is, in my opinion, on par with what Motion Plus controls did for swordplay in Zelda. The overall movements are so much more intuitive. We’ve already gotten a glimpse of this type of experience with select 3DS games, but I think it’s going to start to explode within the next two years.
