• Nintendo 3DSJapan message boards have been buzzing all week that Nintendo is planning on announcing a new 3DS model at E3, something that just yesterday I predicted was unlikely to occur since the present model is being sold at a loss. Rumors float around all the time about such events, but now something has happened that coincides with previous updated hardware announcements. According to Kotaku:

Nintendo has recently dropped the price of the DSi (from $149.99 to $99.99) and DSi LL ($169.99 to $129.99), something console developers regularly do before announcing a new model. This added with the fact that Amazon.co.jp (the Japanese Amazon.com) has mysteriously run out of stock of all models of the 3DS simultaneously has led some people to believe that Nintendo may be planning something... Amazon.co.jp are expected to restock all models on June 4th, 1 day before E3.

So first we get a price drop of the last two major additions to the DS family, and now at the same time Amazon in Japan has ran out of stock of the current 3DS model. While this could all be a big coincidence, and certainly with new colors of the 3DS coming out and the sales trending well Nintendo has no reason for a new model, it still has our heads scratching. Is Nintendo ready to surprise us yet again? June 5th can’t come soon enough.
