I really love what comes out of the video game art community, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a part of that community.
Not only do these artists reimagine and reinterpret video game characters and images, but they also imagine what franchises might look like on future consoles. In this case it’s the opposite; instead of imagining a game of the future, a game of the present has been reimagined as a game of the past.
Deviantart artist jmatchead has created a piece of art that demakes the recently released Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo 3DS, as an SNES title.
In a way, this also gives us a glimpse at what types of games we could have had if the Kid Icarus franchise didn’t go on its twenty-year hiatus. If there had been a Kid Icarus title that looked like this on SNES, I can’t help but wonder what further evolutions in style the series would have gone through before reaching the present. Heck, if any SNES title looked like this, how much better would Nintendo titles look today?
I guess I can answer my own question by looking to Zelda. A Link to the Past was beautiful for its time, and Zelda is one of Nintendo’s most artistically varied franchises, which continually pushes its visual style.
