• Recently I read a games-related article or it might have been a forum conversation, although I can’t remember where or what it was. This topic was posing the question of if you could erase your memory, which title would you erase so you could play it through again as a new player.

The main reason this got me thinking is what if you could use the erasing of your memory to remove a particular BAD gaming moment instead? I mean, we all have particular games that we had rather we had never played or, even better, particular instalments in the many Nintendo franchises that we wish hadn’t been made.

So, it made me think, what title would I erase if I could ..?

For quite a lot of people I have spoken to, the answer to the big question of ‘Which game from a Nintendo franchise would you remove from existence?’ seems to be Metroid: Other M. But personally I loved the game. Sure, it definitely wasn’t up to the standard set by Super Metroid (not that anything probably will be) or Metroid Prime, but it was a pretty decent effort and kept me engrossed all the way to the end.

My personal answer to this is a bit of an unpopular choice: Super Mario Sunshine.

Firstly, and unfortunately ANY Mario game would have suffered the same fate, it followed Super Mario 64. Mario 64 was a complete creative masterstroke. It gave players, for the very first time, not only the ability to roam freely throughout Peach’s Castle, but to do so in 3D. The music was incredible, the gameplay and controls were perfect and the premise was completely engrossing. The graphics may not be as breath-taking now that they were back then but it still remains a solid title. Unfortunately, in my opinion, Sunshine just did not fill the mammoth footsteps left by it’s predecessor.

Secondly, I turn my attention to FLUDD. I couldn’t help but see FLUDD as a quite terrible gimmick and also one of the worst assistant characters in Nintendo’s history. At times I found the thing frustrating to operate and the personality of it as a character was severely lacking in any depth. Also, I found myself thinking at times that Nintendo just wanted to get the FLUDD idea into a game, so built the whole tacky scenario you found yourself in to justify it being there. Just about the only thing I enjoyed about FLUDD was the brief moment when you discover that Professor E Gadd was the one who invented it, and that’s because it reminded me of Luigi’s Mansion.

Finally, and this reason is very personal, I just didn’t enjoy Super Mario Sunshine. At least with, for instance New Super Mario Bros Wii, I enjoyed it enough to actually finish it. Do I think that the NSMB games are incredible pieces of work? No, but I enjoy them. With even better examples, I have finished Galaxy and 64 multiple times and enjoyed playing them through to the end every time. But I just didn’t find Sunshine a good game, so it feels to me like not only a black spot on Nintendo’s record, but on the Mario series as well.

So that’s my choice, what would your game to erase be?
