Shigesato Itoi, the father of Mother, has been teasing a re-release of the acclaimed series for over a month now. Several weeks prior, Satoru Iwata mentioned sitting down with Itoi-san to discuss the Mother series, including the fact that the franchise has many fans in the West despite only one release with very low sales. These two factors together, and many western consumers grew hopeful that we may see a revival of the Mother series in American and European markets.
Fast-forward to yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, and we get a glimpse of the Virtual Console’s 30-30-30 promotion program, where Wii U owners can buy a new game every month for only thirty cents apiece. The US gets several great games as part of this program, including Punch-Out! Featuring Mr. Dream in March. But the exclusive title for March in Japan just so happpens to be Mother 2, or EarthBound.
After several hints, this may seem like a slap in the face to western fans of the series, but don’t get angry just yet. First of all, EarthBound has a lot of legal work to sort out, so the fact that anyone sees a rerelease at all is a marvel. If Nintendo plays their cards right (meaning the way we want them to), a western release of EarthBound for the Wii U Virtual Console isn’t too far off. Cross your fingers, Mother fans, because the game’s not over yet.
