With such little information announced about The Champions’ Ballad, we still don’t know exactly what new features will be added to Breath of the Wild beyond the new story content. But with the recent addition of a new side quest and new Xenoblade costume, it seems the Zelda team has a lot of options when considering new features. One such consideration brought up in the comments recently was the idea of new runes added to The Champions’ Ballad, so we figured this would be the best time to discuss what new runes should be added to the game.

I’m sure a lot of you are way more creative than I am, so you’ll probably have some great ideas for new runes. But if I was to offer one suggestion, I think that Breath of the Wild would benefit greatly from a Hookshot-like rune. As much I like climbing — or zipping through the air with Revali’s Gale and the Glider, even — I do think that the rush of scaling a gigantic structure diminished as the game went on. Toward the end of my playthrough, traversing up a huge cliff side seemed somewhat tedious.

So with The Champions’ Ballad, a rune that would swiftly and accurately carry Link across a large gap just by pointing at a target would help streamline the experience of exploring the overworld, especially if the DLC re-uses the original game’s maps. Hyrule Castle has already served as a final test of our abilities to climb a large structure effectively; there really isn’t more for us to prove. As well, I feel that the developers could present a slew of interesting Shrine puzzles with this mechanic. Just imagine gliding high into the air through a jet stream and quickly targeting a metal grating or treasure chest at the top.

That, of course, is just one example. What new runes do you think should be added to Breath of the Wild? How would a new rune change how we play through the game? Share your ideas in the comments below!

    Animal/monster control!

hit a animal or monster with this beam and it will fight for you and maybe some basic commands. A bit like wolf Link.
Or being able to warp into it and have complete control over it, like with the command melody in Wind Waker.

I think that would be cool and fun to experiment with, attack a camp with a bear for example.

    • Coral the Llama

      Sounds like Mario Odyssey

      • Jebradiah Drake

Haha, well it worked out well for them!

        • Dylan

I want Mario to use cappy to possess Link 😀 Mario!Link

      • richa

Command melody in wind waker D:
It was before mario odyssey :3

        • Christian Beach

Wind Waker let you command objects before it was cool!

  • David García Abril

An upgrade for the camera rune that turns it into the Photo Mode from “Super Mario Odyssey”.

    This game NEEDS that function!

    • Jebradiah Drake

What does Photo Mode do that the Camera Rune doesn’t? Honestly asking.

      • Oscar Yasser Garcia Juallek

It allows you to move the camera to such a degree of control you can move the camera out of the range of just a selfie. With Photo Mode you could take screenshots worth of developer previews(any angle you want with anything you want in frame, including Link in any position)

        • Jebradiah Drake

          Sounds nice.

      • David García Abril

It allows you stop the action at almost any moment (for example, in the middle of a jump), rotate the camera 360º around Mario, move it back and forth to a certain degree, even rotate the image itself so you can orientate it vertically and use it as a phone wallpaper later (after extracting the image file from a micro SD, of course), and it has some Instragram-like filters.

It’s pretty much the same you can do in some Sony games for the PS4, like “The Last of Us”, “Uncharted 4”, and “Horizon”.

You can take some really cool screenshots with it in “Mario Odyssey”, and it would be brilliant if you could use it in “Breath of the Wild” too.

  • Jebradiah Drake

Oh boy, it should be fun to see what people come up with. I always love talking about new Zelda items. I guess I’ll leave a list of stuff I’ve thought of in the past:

    1. Drone Rune: Based off the Beetle. The Drone Rune is similar to the Bomb Rune, in that the Sheikah Slate creates a solid object. By using the Drone Rune, the Slate creates a small Sheikah Drone that can be flown around just like the Beetle. The Drone is helpful for scouting out areas, gathering objects in hard to reach spots, and drawing away enemy fire. The Drone Rune takes quite awhile to recharge compared to other Runes, but it can be flown around a great length of time and distance before needing a recharge.

    2. Solaris Rune: Part of the weather trio, the Solaris Rune shoots a beam into the sky that can change the current and upcoming weather. The Solaris Rune can turn the skies complete clear and let the sun shine forth. The Solaris Rune works almost anywhere.

    3. Monsoonis Rune: Part of the weather trio, the Monsoonis Rune shoots a beam into the sky that can change the current and upcoming weather. The Monsoonis Rune can bring down heavy rainfall that raises water levels and extinguishes fires. The Monsoonis Rune does not work in certain areas like the desert, or volcanoes, in cold areas it creates snow instead of rain.

    4. Thundaris Rune: Part of the weather trio, the Thundaris Rube shoots a beam into the sky that can change the current and upcoming weather. The Thundaris Rune summons thunderclouds that electrify metal objects and causes lightning to rain down. It does not work in several areas.

    5. Dominion Rune: Based off the Dominion Rod. The Dominion Rune allows you to possess any Sheikah Tech machine around you for a single minute. While you take control of Sheikah machine, you will be able to use all of its functions, and if it is mobile you can pilot it around. You cannot directly damage the machine as you control it, but you can pilot it into its doom, or cause it to fight a dangerous enemy. If your physical body is harmed while you pilot a machine, you will lose control and return to your body. The Dominion Rune takes awhile to recharge, but not a full minute.

And I’ll type the second half of the list when I get home.

    • Dragonmaster 150

You know the dominion rune idea reminds me of this April fools video from Gamespot. which, strangely enough, I don’t think has actually been featured on ZI. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdtoTKed5Cc

      • Jebradiah Drake

I haven’t watch the video, but is it like the video from Dorkly where they ride on top of the Guardian to get it to go in the opposite direction of them?

        • Dragonmaster 150

Nope, it’s a video where they shoot some footage in gam and then they do a bit of video editing with their footage and they basically trick you into thinking Link is actually piloting a guardian, like from inside.

Gamespot actually uploaded a video telling people how they made it because people were so convinced that being able to pilot a Guardian was a thing they were wasting some of the really good in-game resources. Here’s that vid.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYQykzaBl_8&t=2s

          • Jebradiah Drake

It’s pretty neat. If something like the Guardian Key or Dominion Rune was added to the game’s DLC would you be excited to find it?

          • Dragonmaster 150

I think it would be interesting, I don’t know If I would use it a whole lot, but it’d definitely something I would have fun using, and there could be some interesting puzzles involving said rune to manipulate, sheika tech.

          • Jebradiah Drake

What I’d really like though is a hookshot that can penetrate rocky surfaces and let me scale up mountains quicker.

  • BMORRI

Chronosis: Works like the time crystal thingies from SS. You can use it to see rebuilt versions of the ruins in Hyrule.
Gale: Change the direction and strength of wind.
Gravisis: You pick a center point, and then the radius to make a black-hole like object. Larger black holes last for shorter amounts of time.

    • Jebradiah Drake

Oh Gravisis reminds me of the Triloth spell!

  • Xaragon

Samoria- It works like a hybrid between Cryonis and Bomb. You aim a cursor on the ground, create a red-orange cube that is affected by physics. It can be pushed, picked up, thrown, affected by Magnesis, affected by Stasis, and can detonate (it lacks the explosive properties of the bombs so it can only burn nearby enemies rather than propel them or break objects). It sinks in water. One can be active at a time.

Pegasus Boost- Toggle it with L. It puts you in Rune Mode like the other runes do. It’s disabled by dashing. If you walk forward (full analog) for ten seconds, Link gains speeds that are comparable to Goron Rolling or a certain GameShark code in OoT where you press A to propel forward. Limits left-right movement. Deals touch damage & knockback to weaker enemies. Colliding with a wall cancels it, gives you knockback, and empties your stamina. Crouching lets you stop instantly to store your speed for five seconds and you can dash in another direction by uncrouching (good for making sharp turns). Jumping with stored energy will propel you based on your speed and momentum, fall damage still applies. (If the level needs to load geometry, he can get dizzy with blurred vision until the uncompressed models and textures load properly.) Has a recharge time like Stasis. Shield-surfing out of it will allow for better turning if the level geometry and physics work in your favor.

Space- Activate it with L+A. For a brief period of time, all climbable surfaces have Mario Galaxy physics. It’s unaffected by rain, too. Meaning you can run up walls. Enough time to run up the walls in the rain forest, but not enough to scale most Hebra mountains.

Zora- Changes the swimming controls to match Majora’s Mask 3D. No stamina drainage, no recharge. It just toggles. Un-toggling underwater forces you to resurface.

  • Dylan

like what @disqus_t4BPqgWyxJ:disqus did with the pegi boots rune, I like to have the TINGLE RUNE! its like Magnesis, except: it acts like a magnet for rupees within a 5 mile radis. it cost about one koroak seed piece or if you get the final reward, it last up for about half a day. then recharges.

Dorloydian Rune – works as a dungeon tracker giving you alternate ways to go to a dungeon, like a GPS.

Rinku’s Rune – let’s Link Talk in Hylian. [so Link actually talks, just adds subtitles and Link speaking in Hylian, during cut scenes and during town visits, when he first encounters a new enemy or when he gains a memory.]

    • Jebradiah Drake

Oh is Rinku’s Rune like the book of Mudora? What if it could translate Sheikah text too?

      • Dylan

sort of. but it actually gives Link exclusive dialogue as well.

        • Xaragon

We’d really need a rune for that? All the text would have to be added in just to make it work.
          Runes should be practical.

          • Dylan

why not while also translating the Hylian it ihnk that could be fun. you can toggle the voice on and off.

    • Dragonmaster 150

5 miles seems like a pretty large distance, maybe 5 meters would work a bit better.

      • Dylan

okay if that works, all fo these were just made up on the spot XD but hey that golden doo do now has a damn purpose.

  • Jesiah Grant

Whats sad is theres really only 4 unique runes, amiibo scanner and the camera should not have a place on the slate and the two bombs should of taken up one place and you could alternate with a press of a button. Alas it makes it look like there’s more there on the sheikah slate, when really there isnt :/

    • InfinityD4

I KNOW RIGHT, IT’S A ZELDA GAME, WHERE ARE MY ITEMS

      • Jebradiah Drake

        They took our items!

      • Jesiah Grant

Agreed, where are ze items, I mean. Underwater swimming isnt even in this game :/

    • Jebradiah Drake

Yea the idea of a single item being our entire tool inventory isn’t bad, but the Sheikah Slate should have had a lot more abilities we unlocked along the way. That being said, do you think any of the ideas we came up with would work nicely inside the game?

I think the Gravisis Rune sounds cool.

      • Jesiah Grant

Well like a hover boots rune, or iron boots rune would of been cool heck even a hookshot or ball and chain rune would of been nice, I was severely disappointed that there was no underwater swimming in this game

        • Jebradiah Drake

BotW probably has some of the lamest swimming mechanics in the series, even with the Zora Armor.

          • Jesiah Grant

Yeah I relly feel like a gimp swimming, it feels so backwards. Majoas masks zor swimming was excellent and skywards swords…well at least we could go underwater

          • Jebradiah Drake

I feel like in the next big Zelda games we should always get underwater mechanics. And it’d also be cool to get new water based moves like the torpedo spin or even the ability to swim up water falls, like BotW gave us, but swimming just wasn’t that fun in BotW. I honestly dreaded each time I had to cross over water.

          • Jesiah Grant

I’d also kill for actual MAGIC in zelda again, I miss the magic meter I miss spells….

          • Jebradiah Drake

It seems like lately the series is getting more Sci-fi than fantasy.

          • Jesiah Grant

Yeah relying on sheikah tech then proper magic… I feel that also :/

          • Jebradiah Drake

And it Skyward Sword we started to see futuristic technology emerging.

          • Jesiah Grant

Twilight princess really hit home with the fantasy, middle earthish vibe, I’d prefer to go back to that. Too much tech makes the golden goddesses and the hylians less relevant. I dont want magic being merged with sheikah tech.

          • Xaragon

I don’t mind technology as long as it can work with or appropriately contrast the game’s theme. I don’t really care all that much for the Shiekah tech though, it’s colorful, but the aesthetic is otherwise a tad ugly.

          • Jesiah Grant

Sheikah shrines say hello, my god the same aesthetics throughout all 120 got old real fast … I’d really like more diversity in dungeon designs in the next zelda

          • Xaragon

I think three themes would have eased it. Different music and colors would have sufficed, but baffled they made every single shrine look and sound the same.

          • Jesiah Grant

Yeah having the one theme and music didnt work in their favor as when i look back on them they kinda merge into one and i cant recall what ones I really enjoyed. They were over too quick, also the sense of mystery was thrown out the window coz we knew what we were going to get the moment we arrive. Actually theres either shrines or korok puzzles in the overworld pretty much, so the sense of discovering something new is quite miniscule

          • Xaragon

I know @jebradiahdrake:disqus was asking me earlier about which Zora Armor I preferred, but can we talk about how stupid BOTW’s was mechanically?
It lets you swim up waterfalls, that is cool, that is awesome, I like it, all games should have it. However, EVERYTHING ELSE about the swimming in this game goes completely against this. His swim speed is slow as shit, it consumes stamina like Wind Waker except it’s even worse, no diving, and if you run out of stamina, you just die/respawn. Why would he swim up freaking waterfalls with such ease and grace but across a flat surface he swims like he just learned? I can swim faster and farther than BOTW Link can with his Zora armor, it makes no sense, especially when every other 3D Zelda game and even the 2D games for that matter have better swimming.

          • Jebradiah Drake

I guess they were just really afraid of us going out to sea with enhanced swimming mechanics 😛

          • Xaragon

They already erected invisible walls around it. You can also use sharks or Lost Woods mist to conceal it. I’m not completely against the stamina, but he can barely swim the width of a swimming pool!

          • Jesiah Grant

Zora armor of the past was to make hylians swim and breath like a zora. The one in BoTW its just a waterfall swimming suit…

    • Xaragon

Metal Gear Solid games typically have inventories like that where similar items take the same inventory slot but you press the perpendicular button to switch it. Like you select your weapon type with left or right and pick the exact item with up or down.
In BOTW, hovering over the Bomb should reveal the other bomb type above it in the menu.

      • Jesiah Grant

Yeah I’m quite familiar with MGS, snake eater i my favorite. I honestly think they did it just to make it look like there was more on the slate…

        • Xaragon

It’s probably just they didn’t think of it and with the small number of runes they had, it looked nice enough.
Snake Eater is awesome and the first MGS I completed.

          • Jesiah Grant

Yeah… yeah same snake eater was my first mgs. Got a real soft spot for big boss. I like him more then solid snake 😛

          • Xaragon

I do like MGS4’s camo system a lot though. MGSV had great gameplay too, but it was very unfinished.

          • Jesiah Grant

MGSVs gameplay was amazing but man that story…I love MGS for its cutcenes, that game had barely any. It really did really unfinished, I mean we made a Metal Gear of our own but we cant ride it, only send it out on missions

          • Xaragon

Metal Gear has great cutscenes, but I feel like now that the story is basically over, we could now have a more gameplay focused game. V would have been a different game entirely if Kojima had his way though. We lost like 70% of the game simply because they kept it on PS3 and 360. They outright cancelled the 360 version of MGS4 because it needed like 4 DVDs just to play the story, but the next game was now locked by its restrictions. There’s enough stuff missing that no amount of modding can bring it close to what it could have been. There were like 3 more maps planned at least.

  • Eric Aguiar

It’s not runes, but I’d really like thematic dungeons where you can alternate between Link and a Champion or champion descendant (by pressing the Whistle button or something) to control them and use their special abilities. Kinda like Medli and Makar on WW.

    • Jebradiah Drake

That sounds super cool, but honestly I would rather be able to transform into them (like with the masks from MM) than control them.

  • Jebradiah Drake

Does anyone else feel like they could have put more effort into the symbols for the Runes? I feel like they are a little lackluster considering how important they are in the game. I also think that the bombs should have been colored orange instead of blue.

    • Xaragon

They’re blue because it’s what bombs typically look like in Zelda games. It’s like having a phone icon look like a bar with a speaker and receiver rather than a plastic slate with a screen or a save icon being a floppydisc card instead of a hard drive.

      • Jebradiah Drake

But the Cryonis Rune is already blue! And even if the bombs are traditionally blue (not always) the explosions are always orange and fiery.

        • Xaragon

Ice has always been blue, too, and like previous games, same colored weapons has never been an issue.
The explosions are blue because it’s probably based on different technology to drive home the Sheikah theme. Previous bombs were based on gunpowder which would involve sparks, flames and smoke where these bombs are more electronic.

          • Jebradiah Drake

Yea but Sheikah Tech is orange a lot too, if you know what I mean.

          • Xaragon

But the bombs are blue light.

          • Jebradiah Drake

            Ok nevermind.

          • Jebradiah Drake

Ok what about this! What if…

When you create the bomb it glows orange, just like inactive Sheikah Tech, but when you drop it or throw it then the bomb instantly turned blue to signify that it’s ready to be set off?

Then the bomb Rune can be colored orange, so that it’s easy to tell apart from Cryonis and all the Runes are different colors, but the bomb itself is still blue and the explosion is blue too.

          • Xaragon

I’ve never had a problem telling the difference between a snowflake and a ball of gunpowder, so it being orange would only complicate things and just look less iconic. They’re active as soon as you toss them.

          • Jebradiah Drake

The Sheikah Bombs are very different from the iconic blue bombs anyway.

    • Oscar Yasser Garcia Juallek

Bombs have been blue in the Zelda series since day one

      • Jebradiah Drake

        They’re black in Twilight Princess

        • Oscar Yasser Garcia Juallek

Single exception in the ENTIRE SERIES. Ocarina of Time? Blue. Wind Waker? Blue. Skyward Sword? Blue. The black in Twilight Priuncess was part of the darker aesthetic design of that game. Which doesn’t apply to the more nuanced and colorful aestietic design of Breath of the Wild

          • Jebradiah Drake

Haha I am just hard to please. But I feel like the Bombs should have been colored that same orange colored energy that we see on Sheikah Tech that we haven’t activated yet. If you know what I’m talking about 😛

        • Xaragon

They’re still blue, just a darker shade to fit the theme.

          • Jebradiah Drake

Hmm… I don’t think so. I think they’re more like a dark shade of grey.

          • Xaragon

            Desaturated dark blue.

          • Jebradiah Drake

I looked it up and they’re pretty black.

    • Noname

I’m sorry, but me and many others like the blue bombs as they are. :/

      • Jebradiah Drake

Haha oh well, agree to disagree 😛

  • I’d rather them create a dungeon that makes use of all these runes in full before they add another rune to the mix. So here’s hoping they do that with the DLC dungeon.

    • Jebradiah Drake

There’s probably only going to be one dungeon so… we probably just won’t get anything then…

I think we’ve already used the previous Runes plenty throughout all the different Divine Beasts and Shrines, at this point we want to see something new that’s fun to play around with!
