Angry Video Game Nerd: Hydlyde and Zelda

Outside of the fact that it has elements in it that mirror the Legend of Zelda and music that is simply an Indiana Jones remix, the thing I found most interesting is the game actually came out before Zelda did. This could imply that many of the gameplay elements of the franchise we know and love actually originated from this title, instead of being an original thought. I like what he says at the end, however: He compares the fact that he hates the puzzles and such in Hydlide, while the Legend of Zelda has the same puzzles and we praised it for them. Who knows, is this secretly the real inspiration behind the creation of Zelda? Is the Legend of Zelda simply a better version of Hydlide? We will never know.

It's a little hard to judge on the issue of Hydlyde, although that death animation is more than a little familiar. There is a lot of similarity there, but I'd also say that those most familiar elements are simply role playing genre elements that the Zelda series has shed as it's progressed. Since the NES games Zelda is much better at offering clues to solving it's own puzzles (although some might say it does that too much in certain games), and has carved a stylistic niche for itself.

What I do find more interesting is just how similar the original Seiken Densetsu (that's Secret of Mana for the rest of us) on the Game Boy has so many similarities to Link's Awakening, but Seiken Densetsu was released even before A Link to the Past. Could it be possible that without Seiken Densetsu Link would still be offering straight stabs with his sword even in the SNES game? I doubt it, but it's interesting to consider.

I can't really agree until I have seen the original NEC game footage. Ports back then were sometimes completely different from the original versions.

The Famicom port was released in march 1986, less than a month after LOZ surprisingly enough.

AVGN 'reviewed' the NES version (released in 1989) which may also be completely different from the Famicom version.
