The Zelda series has introduced many innovative and enjoyable game play
elements which have then been reused in future titles. From the mighty
Hero's Bow to the common Bomb, many items and actions have appeared in
almost every Zelda game due to popularity and story continuation.
However, why is it that one of the most original and exciting features,
the Sword Beam, has been omitted from the series? The Sword Beam function was first introduced in The Legend of Zelda. When at maximum health, Link would fire sword-shaped lasers form the tip of his blade which acted as effective projectiles. This offered an alternative to those masterful enough to keep themselves out of danger, and these beams offered the perfect alternative to using precious arrow ammo. Almost every Zelda fan loved this invention: the ability to shoot down Octorok's, Tektite's and Moblin's with lasers from Link's sword from across the screen.
Due to popularity, this original game play
technique re-appeared in many future games: The Adventure of Link, A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, the Oracles games, Four Sword Adventures and The Minish Cap.
However, all of these titles have been 2D games, where the world of
Hyrule was viewed from above. Why is it that the prestigious Sword Beam
has not been included in 3D titles, such as Ocarina of Time? There were rumours that the Master Sword in Ocarina of Time would be able to shoot beams when Link was at full health, but the game offered no such feature. Instead, Zelda fans were given the Spin Attack, another previously used technique. While the Spin Attack was an excellent addition to Link's arsenal in the 3D environment, it was not the Sword Beam that many fans dreamed of wielding while trekking through Hyrule Field or Ganon's castle. Nintendo accepted that fans wanted to see a traditional game play element return to the series, and so they decided to incorporate the Sword Beam into the sequel of Ocarina of Time: Majora's Mask. However, fans were once again disappointed. The function was only available at the very end of the game to players who had collected all the masks and obtained the Fierce Deity Mask.
Nintendo has often tried to
improve on elements that they felt were underdeveloped, flawed or
simply repetitive. Some items throughout the series have been revamped,
such as the Gale Boomerang, and many dungeon designs have been through
major changes. Unfortunately, the Sword Beam was not worked on and was
never seen again in a 3D Zelda title. I for one am disappointed in
Nintendo. They knew that they had created an original attack that fans
enjoyed, yet they have not put in the effort to implement this creation
properly into a 3D Zelda game. Zelda Wii is fast approaching, and with
the likelihood of the Wii Motion Plus being used in the game, the
Sword Beam could be yet another fantastic use of the Wii's innovative
controls.Categories: Articles
While the Spin attack was in LttP and LA, it became a big hit in OoT. Everyone loved that red glow when it was fully charged. XD
But yeah, I probably shouldn't have made it sound like it was invented in OoT. :P
Despite that, no Sword Beam! I remember reading all the pre-OoT hype and seeing all the fans screaming for epic lasers. And as the article points out, MM did a pretty half-arsed job at giving us a 3D sword beam. Damn lazy Nintendo.
Yes, quite right, I originally had a post about how the magical effect on the spin attack made it special but I forgot to put in e-mail (heh).
Other than that, I agree, I wish I had more beamz >.<
Although I see why they would be a bit weird in 3d games. Surely the developers saw this too.
Contrary to what I just said, PH did sword beams okay, technically its 3d... well, idk. either way obviously graphically it wouldn't be too bad, but it could just be really messy or something.
perhaps I should put more thought into my comments :P
Cut Nintendo a break, do You know how easy that would male the game? Then we'd whine and moan about that...
By no means should the Sword Beam be super powerful. Fierce Deity was a godlike character, he was deisgned to destroy Majora easily.
An ideal amount of damage for the Sword Beam would be 1/2 or 1/4 of the sword's regular damage, and it would obviously require aiming (seeing as the 3D world is much larger than the 2D side-scrolling screens that we are used to using the Sword Beam in).
The Sword Beam was in beta pictures of OoT (actual beam, not a sphere thing like in MM), but maybe it couldn't look right due to the technical limitations of the N64. However, that's no excuse for TWW and TP, which are on the GC and could easily handle it.
There is also sword beam in PH.
too bad ph wasn't a real game
I have wanted the sword beam back for awhile now, implementing it into Zelda Wii would be a fantastic idea.
there's a simple reason that they discluded the sword beam from OoT and all the other 3D zeldas.
It would break an already easy game.

I think it's more of s story thing. Even though there is no Overall connection between games. Well that;s whay Nintendo said. I believe someone down the line That was a power the sword got. The early games "which are later in the timeline maybe have it" The newer games which are early in the timeline" doesn't have it. So this new Zelda Wii could setup something with the sword and power beam. If the idea that Link and the sword character are true.
Wouldn't it be kind of hard to make the Sword Beam 3D? I didn't know it was that famous, awesome!
I can only see the sword beam working as something like a spell, like Din's Fire or Nayru's Love, using up magic instead of requiring full health. Personally, I'm not arsed whether it appears in any more games. It was useful in the 2Ds, but I can't really see a point having it in the 3D ones.
There was also sword beam in Wand Of Gamelon and Faces Of Evil, and it was pretty usefull.
also why there isn't sword beam is super smash bros. series??
Two words: Phantom Hourglass.
It had a sword beam.
One simple reason. Making a Sword beam in a 3D World is significantly harder. The range, as you see far more into the hirozon, that has to be decided. Also how would it fly. In 3d dungeons, even in the field, there is a difference in height. If it just flew straight foward even the slightless hill would make it useless, either stopping it or making it fly overhead, and in dungeons there are a lot more elevations (maybe it would wotk more in Buttom of the Well, but thinking of most 3D dungeons it seems an exeption). Then the subject of form. Just a sword shaped beam would be pretty useles, as it is easily avoidable and hard to use in a 3D realm. But a horizontal arc it is easy that takes to much space hitting multiple enemies easily, making it overpowered (even with reduced damage), but making it useless against flying enemies. And then a vertical slash, would have the same problem as the stab, being easily avoidable and still airborne enemies would be pretty useless. And a diagonal is similar to the horizontal. And then the real area of effect (only hit where the beam does seem to pass, or cut some slack to the player). In most cases the attack would be useless and could be bearly handed during non Z-targetting combat. And then depnding in those factors it would be also useless during Z-targetting. Against flying enemies with Z-targetting could work, but in game the arrows are easier to come than in other games, and would be easier to use. If there is no charge time, even with reduced damage it could make a lot enemies easier (Stalfos, as you just have to stay at a safe distance, not use the shield and let them suffer, Iron Knucles, too slow, just keep away firing the beam) but still be useles with other enemies, with or without charge time(Wolfos, move too much in the plane, Big Skultullas don't take damage form the front). And then there is there could be de swing dependant form of the beam, but then it would be unreliable (in all the games so far, as there isn't a lot of control over the swings).
The only way I can hink out of top of my head would be to handle it the same way as the arrows, bringning in the first person perspective, but that would brake the flow of the game, the combat would get pretty clunky. And in Z-targetting a lot of the probelms I can think of remain.
While i like the Sword Beam (who doesn't?) of old school Zelda, I think that in general it would be more of a anoyance than a benefit for the game, except greatly implemented, which seems hard to do. 3D Zeldas work perfectly without that feature, and it wasn't really that significant to enjoy the expirience.
Also, PH isn't really a 3D game, the plan is expanded, but still lacks the third dimension. (Sorry for the sloppy language, I'm pretty sleepy).
I agree 100% with kurokotetsu. And to everyone stating PH is an exception of the "no sword beam for 3D games", I'd like to add that the problem with a 3D Sword Beam is the 3D environment, not the graphics... PH was 3D, but the game played pretty much like a 2D Zelda (aside from the stilus, of course), so the Sword Beam could be implemented just like in previous (2D) Zelda games. In a truly 3D Zelda, the only way I can see the Sowrd Beam being implemented is the way it was in MM, and that would make the games too easy, no matter how much damage it causes... It would be like spamming arrows against enemies you're supposed to use the sword to defeat (stalfos, ironknuckles, darknuts...)
i am 50 50 here, sword beam would be nice to have in zelda wii,but then what would be the point of getting the bow from a ungeon or the slingshot from a store???like you could skip 50% of a dungeon if you had a sword beam....i never liked the full health sword beam, how about link wasting magic for each sword beam??and if he has his whole magic meter full,he could use it all for a giant, almost fierce deity sword beam?another thing, pegasus boots!!!!in zelda wii!!!!like in the grand theft auto series, link runs really fast for 10 seconds until he gets tired!!cool huh,and rocs feather, omg, link jumps really high and uses his magic to fly around, wouldnt that be so cool in a 3 d game??

Spin attack was in AlttP and LA. OoT added the leap attack though, and obviously 3D combat which was nice (lol).
